Khichdi was a box office success in India on release in October 2010 and generated big money at the box office. It also generated a controversy over its plot, which was based on how an Indian girl goes on an exchange program to live with an aunt and uncle in America and learns of their successful business of making kichdi, a cheap dish which is often made up of anything put into a pot together. The movie is directed by Subhash Kapoor and stars newcomer Anushka Sharma. The movie featured some popular faces like Aamir Khan and Rekha, but it failed to make it to any award nominations for technical excellence or story-telling qualities. The movie is based on the real life story of Lakhvinder Kaur who made a trip to the United States to meet her cousins. During this time she became interested in American cooking and made kichdi, a popular Indian dish, and saw an opportunity for profit. The film is about the success and failure of India's first kichdi business. How badly Anushka Sharma's character needed to be dumped: Anushka was fine with everything about the role except that it took away from her ability to do any serious acting because that was what she really wanted to do. She decided that even if she had to take home the same pay as the others, she would rather buy herself a better script. The reaction in red-state America to a Bengali girl running a business: According to a "Los Angeles Times" article, the reaction of large sections of the American public was positively surprised that there were Indians putting down roots in America, but there was very little reaction from the small-business community. In fact, "a number of [the shopkeepers] expressed interest in running kichdi franchisee shops in California." How strongly Anushka's character was affected by her mother's alcoholism: In one scene where Anushka's character is confronted by her mother with a drunk and violent father, she says that she would have been fine if her father had been there. The love-triangle sub-plot: The sub-plot was not very original or innovative, but it was quite funny. According to one review, the sequences involving the three different boys were a clear sign of a first attempt by a new director. How Anushka Sharma got involved in the film: Anushka was always going for roles which meant doing a lot of serious acting and she never wanted to do this kind of role because that didn't fit her image as an actress. In fact, she says that her mother had to twist her arm as hard as she could before she would agree to be in this film. The future of kichdi in America: Since the movie was based on the true story of a real kichdi business, it actually took place in Kerala, and since Kerala is a hotbed for food and spices, it is certainly possible that there would be a real Kichdi business somewhere out there. However, because this was an American film and not an Indian one, it might take awhile before such a business would become successful. The "Los Angeles Times" article said that the others involved with the film were not sure what to make of this fact because they thought that if Anushka's character had been successful, maybe she could have gotten the recipe from her mother and started her own business someday. cfa1e77820
